Security Vs. Privacy If you were faced with keeping yourself safe or living a life unmonitored; which would you choose? American society has “freedom” unlike any other. However, some of the “free will” that was given has slowly been taken away such as, in the book “1984 ‘, their government took away their thoughts, diversity, and love. In 1984, thoughts are a crime unto the government. The government system is a dictatorship, which means they have, “absolute authority in any sphere”. In London, there is a group called “The Party”, in the nation of Oceania. The Party monitors everyone’s movements from their homes to their local grocery store. The monitoring goes beyond standard procedures of protecting the country, they want the citizens of Oceania to live in the Party’s ideal society. Love in a society filled with so much hate and deceit is almost impossible however, the characters Julia and Winston confessed their love for each other in the book, “1984”. This caused some friction towards the Parties rules. The Party takes away the human interaction among the people to cause a disconnection. However, Julia and Winston’s love for each other caused them to become imprisoned. They both risked their lives for love, which is still choosing privacy over security. They wanted to be able to have their love life in privacy without being punished by the Party. In comparison to the American society there are all kinds of examples of having the government controlling how love is monitored from the LGBTQ community or heterosexual. They make rules and boundaries of what is or isn’t classified as a relationship or who can be together. They cause division on what kind of relationship is classified as right or wrong, that society doesn’t even focus on what’s truly important, their
