Imagine if you were living in a nation where you must live by the rules and if you do not follow the rules, you will be executed. The upsetting part about that is we do live in a world where nations like North Korea do follow the ways similarly to what Winston in living in. The book 1984 has a fair share of moments where the reader follows Winston’s story and comes across some moments where George Orwell writes interesting points where the reader has to pause and re-read the powerful writing George Orwell has created. What is also interesting is 1984 can be related to the world today. Through the book, this phrase is about the superstate always being in war with the other two superstates to keep the people distracted from injustice from the government. It also keeps the people in fear being in the war since the three superstates are evenly matched and it seems the wars will never end. “War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength.” (Pg. 4) Many people believe you must be in war to survive in the world we live in, but in reality everyone is living in a war. War isn’t just about fighting another nation, it is a battle where someone has work as hard as they can to solve the problem. "Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two makes four. If that is granted, all else follows." (Pg. 81) The quote is very powerful because Winston remembers a time where people are free and did not have to follow the lies the government states in the dictatorship he lives in. Winston hates the government and by doing something about it, Winston decided to break the rules of the government and had an affair with Julia. The big picture is in the real world, especially today in the United States, people are still fighting for freedom even though America is known for the land of the free. Religious people more so muslim people are fighting a war in the United States because of ISIS and other terrorist groups and attacks. With this problem, America wants to get rid of the muslim people or even tag them just like they did with the jews in the holocaust and it is very upsetting to hear that this is just a small portion of the war of freedom inside the United States.
