Hanging Chad, undervotes, overvotes, Supreme Court, State Court. Words that all describe the 2000 election for President of the United States. The election between candidate Al Gore and George Bush came down to Florida. The results were not determined overnight. It took 36 days for Al Gore to concede the election results. It all started with the voters’ ballots were made out of paper. Voters used a pin like instrument to poke a perforated portion of the ballot. In total, there were approximately 175,000 disputed ballots, where the ballots perforated portion was not cleaning separated from the ballot, called a Chad. When I watched the episode, I never realized that Davy Crockett could possibly be the man responsible for paving the way for Texas in becoming a state. He furthered the love of country, showed the importance of standing your ground, and of course, not surrendering and running - but fighting. I did not know that after his congressional loss, he joined the Texas Revolution because he was fed up with politics. I did find it interesting he still had political ambitions as he wanted to prove his will, foresight, leadership of men. One can only imagine what went through his head when he realized the Mexicans were closer to the Alamo than he or anyone else thought. When the 6,000 Mexican men arrived and surrounded The Alamo, Davy new he was going to die. His days were numbered. As he stood defending the north wall watching soldiers next to him fall, he never would have dreamed that his death would become a battle cry and allow Sam Houston’s Army of Texas to go from 350 men to over 1,000. While taking his last breath, he would have never thought his name would further the definition of patriotism in America. His name and remembrance would help Sam Houston’s army defeat the Mexican army in only 18 minutes, allowing Texas to begin its journey to become a part of the United
