Explain what is meant by the term of 'duty of care':
Duty of care is when we must follow the correct policies and procedures in order to protect and safeguard children from any harm. This means that we have a respnsibility to do daily health and safety checks on all equipment that children are likely to use encase any of it is broken, we must carry our risk assessments in order to make sure that all work areas and play areas are safe for children to use and also most importantly we must carry out fire drills so that children are familiar with the sound of the fire alarm, aware on where they have to go in order to reach safety and what they have to do.
Upholding the rights of children and young people:
In my work setting in order to make sure that we are upholding the rights of children and young people we must allow them to have thier freedom of speech. If they want to say something we must listen to them we can't ignore what they are saying as one day they may be in some sort of trouble and they are not going to turn to us due to them thinking we are not going to take them seriously. We must make sure that all chemicals that we use for experiments, cleaning etc are locked away in a cupboard safely or kept high up on a shelf out of reach of the children so they don't mistake them fr flavoured drinks and swallow them. If we are working with babies it isimportant that safety gate are placed at the bottom of all stairs and at all doors so that they can't get up the stairs or jam thier fingers in the door
