Reviewing competencies such as, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management, can help all of us work better (Goleman, 2013). So, what are these four domains?

The four domains of EI are:

1. Self-Awareness
How we perceive and understand our own emotions. This is our self-confidence and behavior that flows from our own emotions.
2. Self-Management
This is our self-control over our emotions. How we apply this new awareness to more effectively manage ourselves. For example: our adaptability to certain situations.
3. Social Awareness
Ability to read and understand the emotions of others – empathy.
4. Relationship Management

While visual cues such as facial expressions, body language, and auditory tone are absent, emotions are always present” (Johnson, 2017, para. 1).

If you think about it, even we react to things we read, so naturally our students are reacting in the same manner. Online learners have various perceptions of the online environment and have various emotions to those they interact with in discussions (Johnson, 2017). “A positive emotional reaction will encourage students to build connections, while negative emotions can result in disengagement from the class” (Johnson, 2017, para. 1).

In two recent studies I reviewed emotional intelligence in online learning. The first one “In Emotional Intelligence as a Predictor of Success in Online Learning, the authors evaluated the use of written words as the primary form of communication, without nonverbal cues, and noted that: students’ unmet needs for human contact, lack of self-motivation, or feelings of isolation can deter success in online courses” (Johnson, 2017, para. 8).

In the second study titled, Relationship between Students’ Emotional Intelligence, Social Bond, and Interactions in Online Learning addressed “three key points that addressed emotions and
