In Niccolo Machiavelli's book, The Prince (1513), he evaluates on how a prince can be a successful leader. Machiavelli’s purpose of this guidebook was to construct his argument to the rising ruler Giuliano de Medici for when he comes to power in Florence. He adopts a casual but authoritative tone in order to convince the prince that Machiavelli’s evaluation on how to be the best prince, is the right thing for the prince to do without coming off as he knows more than the prince or is trying to intimidate him.. Machiavelli’s reference to previous rulers and whether their tactics failed or succeeded helps to benefit his credibility along with his allusion to historic text. He appeals to our logic by simply stating a prince can only do what is within his power to control, and his use of an analogy furthers his argument.
In the speech “How to use a paper towel” performed for TED in 2012, Joe Smith delivered an interesting and intriguing speech on how to better use paper towels, to a room of executives and the video would soon be shared with millions. He used a style of speech that although lacking complexity and info at times most definitely kept people watching and listening. Small jokes and simplicity made the speech digestible, comprehensible, and potent. The mode of logic used by Joe Smith is Logos, his use of logos was represented by his use of statistics in the beginning and end of his speech.
In James Paul Gee’s essay “What Is Literacy?’ , he uses the key term ‘discourses’. Gee explains discourses as a placement in society or the belonging to a group in society. Gee states that it come from an individual’s saying, doings, or just their identity. As Gee elaborates on discourses he breaks them down into different areas in which relate to one another.
In the article, “Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction”, Paul Gee informs the reader about his way of talking about literacy and linguistics and what the terms mean to him. How the term language is a misleading term. As he mentioned, "Language" is a misleading term; it too often suggest "grammar. " It is a truism that a person can know perfectly the grammar of a language and not know how to use it. It is not just what you say, but how you say it.
The United States is made up of some of the most diverse and interesting cultures in the world. Jamila Lyiscott proves this by showing her different dialects and how they are all equally important. Lyiscott believes that the way she speaks towards her parents, towards her friends, and towards her colleagues are all one in the same. Throughout the entirety of her speech, Lyiscott changes up her vocal patterns and dialects so that the audience can understand first hand what each of these dialects are. When she talks about her father, Lyiscott uses her native tongue, when she talks to her fellow neighbors and close friends she switches it up to a more urbanized dialect, and when she is in school she masks the other two dialects with a professional sounding language.
We communicate in many ways, either by email, telephone, text, face to face, social media or letters and the language we use allows us to get things done, nonetheless the language and communication method in which we chose to use can vary depending on the discourse community. Much like John Swales suggests a discourse community involves a group of people who share the same common public goals, such as shared interests, rules, structure, and vocabulary. When thinking about the several discourse communities I am evolved in, which include family, coaching football, college student, and a few friends. Creations, like most things in life, are improvable. Ideas and theories are always evolving into different ideas or more sophisticated ones. Discourse communities is a term that has been debated over the years. Three of those debaters are James Paul Gee, James P. Porter, and John Swales. In this essay I will analyze what each of these writers see as the definition of a discourse community while comparing specific points that each of them have regarding their personal view on the subject.
A discourse community is a group of people who share a common goal. Swale, a writer, states that a discourse community has six characteristics. It consists of a common public goal, intercommunication, providing feedback and information, genre, lexis, and expertise. Without these functions, a discourse community would not exist. To many people, a common goal cannot be met, or agreed upon.
An important discourse community that was a part of my life was my volleyball team during my four years of high school. I started playing my first year going into high school and continued until I graduated. Until now I wasn’t even aware that would even be considered a discourse community, but it fits all of the qualifications of Swales’ definition of a discourse community. Goals
A discourse community is a group of people that have a common goal who use lexis, genres and other forms of communication to achieve this goal. Within in the community there are members of hierocracy that can provide expertise. Clubs, teams, organizations and even your friends and family can be consider as a discourse community. I personally didn’t want to choose a team or a club because I am not involved or interested in any at the moment. Something that I am interested is minimalism.
