The trees are blowing peacefully nearby. Every now and then, there is a rustle in the bushes. A bird rests in her nest and a chipmunk scurries along the branches. Scarlett, the red cardinal, lives on a tall oak tree. She has a beautiful nest on the very top branch. Oliver, the chipmunk, lives in the same tree. He lives lower to the ground, in a burrow he made carefully by himself. Oliver runs up all the time to get food from the top branches. Scarlett and Oliver never get along that often, since Scarlett gets annoyed easily. They used to be friends, but Scarlett had started distancing herself away from Oliver. “Scarlett, I’m coming up to get some food for myself,” Oliver tells Scarlett, practically screaming since he wanted to make …show more content…
As Oliver runs around, looking for food, he sees dark clouds. He scurries back to his hole, preparing for the oncoming storm. Scarlett, however, doesn’t have a place to go, and she would never ask Oliver to let her in, even if it was the only option left. So, she flies around, asking different animals if she can stay in their homes until the storm passes.
“Can I stay here while the storm passes?” Scarlett asks a squirrel, who is in a different tree.
“No, there is no room, I have my whole family in here,” the squirrel replies, and goes back into the little hole.
Scarlett asks and asks, she even asks the bear, and they all replied with no. The only option left was Oliver. “But I can’t carry the food in my beak, my beak is too small.” Scarlett explained.
“Then I guess you can’t stay here.” Oliver sassed.
“Please, I have nowhere else to stay.” Scarlett pleaded.
“Get me food or keep looking,” he said as he crawled back inside the tree.
Scarlett flew up to the top of the tree and couldn’t find any nuts. She flies for what feels like hours, but was only a few minutes. The storm was coming closer and she knew that she had to be quick. She flew around frantically until she saw a strawberry plant. She grabbed as many vines holding the strawberries as she could in her beak and rushed back to the tree.
She set down the strawberries and said, “Oliver, can I stay for the storm now, I got you food and it’s coming nearer.”
“Fine, but as long as you let me get food from the top branches whenever I want from now on, alright?” he asked.
“Do I have to?” Scarlett complained.
“Yes, or you can’t stay here,” Oliver threatened.
“Okay, I guess I’ll let you climb up whenever you want. Only to get food, okay?” Scarlett
