Be yourself in this Brave New World Imagine a society where everything you did and thought about was controlled by the government. You wouldn’t be able to do what you wanted to do or think what you wanted to think. You wouldn’t be your own person. In the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, their society is considered stable but no one is truly happy. Lack of individualism in society has a negative impact on individuals. This causes a lack of religion, art and science, all things that are important in our everyday lives. Firstly, lack of individualism impacts individuals in a negative way by also causing a lack of religion, which is very important in society whether we realize it or not. This is shown in chapter 16 when Mustapha Mond says “You’ve got to choose between happiness and what people used to call high art” (Huxley 220). This quotes shows that Mustapha knows that art lets people express themselves and their creativity which is why it's important. However, because all he wants to do is control the population they sacrificed it. Another quote that demonstrates how lack of individualism creates a lack of art in society is in chapter 5 when Bernard tries to express to Lenina the way he’s feeling “It makes me feel as though” [...] “as though I were more me, if you know what I mean. More on my own, not so completely a part of something else” (Huxley 90). This quote is very important because music affects our moods and feelings, something the world leaders don’t want, and because once you express your feelings it creates instability such as break ups and remorse.
