Writing Assignment 2, Prompt #6: Real Experiences of Mental Illness “People with schizophrenia do not think logically, perceive the world accurately, or behave in a way that permits normal everyday life and work” (Beidel, Bulik, & Stanley, 2014, p.357). Each individual diagnosed with schizophrenia deals with their disorder in a different way. In the episode of MTV’s True Life: I Have Schizophrenia, three individuals share their story of living with this disorder. Each of their lives are very different, and they each find ways to handle their mental disorder. These individuals struggle with day to day activities; however, they somehow find a way to keep moving forward. Josh, Amber and Ben are the three individuals in the episode. Amber is a nineteen year old who is currently a sophomore in college. Josh is twenty four and works part time. Ben is twenty three and is taking classes at a local college. Amber and Ben still live at home with their families which is a great support system for them. At the beginning of the episode Josh is living in a hotel but soon gets evicted and stays with his mom or friends. Josh’s unstable lifestyle will lead to future complications in the episode.

She pushes herself to keep going in school, but she knows when she has pushed herself enough. She uses medication to help with her hallucinations.
