Human service is a very broad field, it can range from being the owner of a daycare to being a surgeon. Human service is a highly skilled profession where these professionals use the skills and resources they have acquired to address people’s needs. The three distinct functions of human services are social care, social control, and rehabilitation. (Woodside & McClam, 2015). These functions seek care for people in ways that they cannot provide for themselves or need assistance in. The human service field is such a selfless field and it ranges from such a wide variety of careers; for that reason it is the path I have chosen for my career. Human service assistants play the role of additional support to physicians of all kinds. They assist with their clients in things ranging from daily activities to governmental assistance. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014). To obtain this position a high school diploma is the bare minimum but further education such as a bachelor’s degree in related field opens more variety of advanced positions. On the job training is usually available to those with no experience. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014). Human service assistants work with all populations, it may vary depending on what doctor they are assisting. The average salary for this profession varies depending on the practice. The average hourly pay can range from $11.98 to $16.57. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014). Potential challenges of this field can be work overload, having many clients to help at once. Potential rewards of this field can be gaining skills and expertise. As of 2012, the employment was 327,700 and is expected to increase to 453,900 by the year 2022. In the world of human service professions counseling is one of the largest categories. Counseling can range from children to adults in a professional or non professional manner. For example, a teenager old enough to work can be a camp counselor for kids or an adult with the appropriate educational training can be a rehabilitation counselor. The duties of a counselor can vary depending on specification but in general they help and advise people with a variety of problems. (Woodside & McClam, 2015). Professional positions as a counselor require a master’s degree in a related area, graduate school, and certification. The requirements can vary depending on specialty. (Woodside & McClam, 2015). This profession is very flexible in the population it works with as it is such a broad field. The median annual pay can range from $35,590 to $60,560. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014). Some potential challenges of this field may be not knowing how to advise a client appropriately. Some potential rewards of this field is the ability to have more than one area of specification. As of 2012, employment was 262,300 and is expected to increase to 293,500 by the year 2022. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014).
