“What can make a hippopotamus smile? What can make him run for more than a mile?” These are the words I chant in a cadence, words I have become so familiar with. Jana erupts in laughter, the creases beside her eyes crinkle as she nudges me; it’s her signal for me to sing again. She grasped my hand as we sat by the extinguished bonfire; the once crisp air is muddled with the smell of smoke. The sun’s glow starts to vanish, and it’s light paints our shadows across the gravel floor. The air was still, just the sound of my voice echoed and Jana’s subtle humming. I have always been drawn to solving problems; in our rapidly expanding world there is always a necessity for sustainable and innovative solutions. This is why medicine has really captured my attention. Doctors are some of the world greatest problem solvers. Personally I have always been drawn to a program called Doctors Without Borders, which allows doctors to travel to other countries in need of emergency medical care. This program that I hope to do in the future would allow me to pair a medical occupation with philanthropy. By participating in YELS during the summer I would be given the tools to implement change. This summer program would not only provide me with mentorship, but an environment filled with peers who have an appreciation for creating a difference. YELS offers a great environment for community service, and growth especially when in concern to leadership and entrepreneurship. The YELS summer program would enable me to accrue knowledge from others that will help me nurture ambition to serve the community on a greater scale. I hope to contribute a variety of resourceful and innovative skills that can enrich not just my experience at the program, but others as well. If given the chance to attend YELS I intend to take full advantage of the knowledge I receive not only to enhance my life but my community on broader scale as
