My job as a patient care technician allowed me to care for numerous individuals from a variety of backgrounds. Through this experience, I came to the realization that I loved people. I loved hearing their stories and the secret hopes and fears they would share with me in the dead of the night. I realized that I wanted to have a career where I could not only help people, but learn from them as well. I believe a career in the healthcare field would allow me to do this. As a result, I chose to double major in Biomedical Science and Global Health. I know these majors will prepare me for a career in the medical field. Following my graduation from ASU, I hope to attend Physician Assistant school or medical school. As a medical professional, I would like to work with underserved populations and follow in the footsteps of my grandmother. She worked as a nurse at a large corporate hospital, but also volunteered her knowledge and time at a local free clinic. My grandmother found time to give back despite raising four kids and a hectic night shift schedule. I hope to set a similar example, and always manage to give back to my community. In addition to volunteering at local clinics, I would like to develop a program for at-risk students. I hope to create a program that would allow these students to shadow nurses, doctors, and firefighters to hopefully spark a passion and encourage higher education. Additionally, each student would be matched with a mentor who could help them navigate the process of achieving their goal. As someone who has greatly benefitted from mentorship, I would like to be a mentor to others and create an impactful mentoring program in the community I serve.
