My decision to pursue a career in the medical field all began when I was a little girl in Vietnam. My aunt brought me alone with her to a blind orphanage where she quotidian volunteered. When we arrived, I realized that this wasn’t just an institution for blind orphans but rather a shelter for all aspect of illness and disabilities. I saunter around and for the first time I became aware of how little others had and how fortunate I was. The volunteers tried their best to provide everyone’s exigency but the institution just didn’t have enough funds to provide enough for everyone. This realization intensified my desire to engage myself in volunteer work in the community. In high school, I dedicated much of my time to volunteer clubs such as Key Club, Autism Speaks Club, and Red Cross Club. My involvement with National Honor Society and Math Honor Society also allowed me to continue my volunteer work in my community. This scholarship will provide me the support I need to continue my education and passion for helping others. There is a saying, “be the difference you want to see in the world” and I want to be that difference. Becoming a physician assistant will allow me to assist those in need of health care in my community. Through volunteering, I found that health care is a huge problem in poor communities such as the one I live in. Many of them cannot afford health insurance due to the high expenses and those that do have insurance are restricted because insurance companies find ways to pay only the minimal of medical expenses. This leaves many people in debt or without treatment due to high medical expenditures. These people pray every day that they are healthy because the value of being ill is out of their reach. As I acquire the right skills, I can contribute my free time to volunteering at free health clinics or community health centers. This is my goal for my college education.
