Katherine Barlow was the only school teacher of the town Green Lake. She was well known across the town, not only for being smart, pretty, and kind, But for her famous spiced peaches. Katherine’s personality changes a lot throughout the story. Most of this character change is caused by Trout Walker, a student of Katherine. Her loss of a loved one also contributes to this change. This shows how a big event in someone's life can change them forever(Sachar 101-115). Sam the onion man meant a lot to Katherine. He was killed by Trout Walker. He was killed because He kissed Katherine which was illegal for him because an African-American to kiss a White woman. Sometimes she felt his arms on her cold shoulders. She knew she was crazy (Sachar 120). During her sadness eventually turned into anger at two people, Trout and the Sheriff. She was trying to save Sam because the sheriff said he would hang Sam. So, she told Sam to go leave the town quickly to save himself, it ended up very unfortunate.

After her change in personality she became a criminal that stole money from people and kissed all of her dead victims. Twenty years later years later she came back to Green Lake after her heist at the banks across the town. She was caught by Trout Walker. He was demanding the money she stole. She hid it so they couldn’t find it .She never got to tell Him and his wife Linda where the money was hidden. She also stole from Stanley Yelnats IV and left him in a desert thinking he wouldn’t survive, but he did. In conclusion, it is crazy how one traumatic incident can change someone and the way they live. Sometimes people's personality changes can lead to a very unfortunate life like Kissin’ Kate Barlow. Life back then was hard and unfair for African Americans. That is why Sam got killed because he wasn’t supposed to kiss her. It was illegal .Kate went from bright, nice and smart, to a very sad woman after Sam’s death, to finally her notorious money stealing
