We are born with the tools we need to teach compassion and love to the innocent. Innocence is not knowing any better, or not having enough experience to fully comprehend your actions. Compassion is caring for others by putting yourself in their shoes. Additionally, it is also thinking about what it must be like for them to go through that particular moment. In the film, I Am Sam, the main character, Sam, has autism. He had a daughter named Lucy with a homeless woman who stayed with him, but left immediately after Lucy’s birth. Nonetheless, he decides to raise her on his own, but right before Lucy’s seventh birthday, the school board calls him in to tell him that he is unfit as a parent because of he lacks some mental capabilities. This film demonstrates that innocent people can show compassion because they can recognize other people’s pain, they can sacrifice and take risks for others, and they show this through Sam’s fight to get his daughter back. This message is very important for all people to understand because some people may think of innocent people as invalid. This is not true because they experience feelings just like anyone else. The innocent may just look at things differently than others. Innocence and compassion coexist because people who do not fully comprehend the world around them can comprehend others’ pain.
