“Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things.”
“ A chief! A Chief! ” (Golding 22) This quotation comes from Lord of the Flies by William Golding where the boys who are on the island have just decided that they should vote for a chief to keep the island under control. The author is trying to show the reader that when something goes wrong the first thing that people usally do is try to organize it and get it under control.William Golding uses power symbolization throughout the book in order to get his message across. Golding creates an extended metaphor to explore characters' powers to help the reader understand the amount of power someone has has an effect on how well society will run.

Golding wants the reader to know that when society is functioning someone always feels the need to have control, even when they aren’t allowed, and that is when things start to go badly and society can’t recover. The second quote happens when Jack lets the fire burn out and Ralph is really upset at him because having the fire would be one of the main ways that they would be able to be rescued if a boat could see the smoke. “‘I’m chief. We’ve got to make certain. Can’t you see the mountain? There’s no signal showing. There may be a ship out there’” (Golding 108). This quote was one of the main events that started the immense amount of conflict between Jack and Ralph. They all lost control and they all thought that Simon was the beast and took the violent way of things. “ Softly, surrounded by a fringe of inquisitive bright creatures, itself a silver shape beneath the steadfast constellations, Simon’s dead body moved out toward the open sea” (Golding 154). This quote is showing that overtime society always breaks down even if there are rules, leaders, and everything is going good. This relates to society today because society today people are protesting, rioting, and our society is falling apart and so are people with all of the division. The second quote happens when Piggy and Ralph had just gone up to Castle Rock to try to retrieve piggy’s glasses but in the meantime Jack was planning something unspeakable. “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist” (Golding 181). Jack killed Piggy in order to show how powerful he is and to seem scarier than he really is. When Piggy died, the conch also shattered and the conch symbolizes unity so when the conch broke that was the breaking point of the island.
