What is fear? Do you have a fear and/or fears? Fear arises when you know something or someone is a threat to you. It is caused by the awareness of danger. Typically you will have a reaction to the fear you come across. As they express “fight or flight”. In the story Lord of the
Flies, the boys on the island are affected by fear. The boys let this fear manipulate their situations they have gone through, throughout the story. Golding lets fear be known throughout the story and shows us this through the characters. For example, Jack’s fear of losing power results in him being manipulative towards the others on the island, Ralph’s fear of not knowing what’s up next for him resulted in his downfall as a leader.

The beast was brought up in the beginning of the story, but no one really paid attention to what was basically the “unknown”. In the story the littluns say, “It was furry. There was something moving behind its head--wings.
The beast moved too--” (Goldin pg. 100). This quote shows that they were scared of something that they did not know if it was real or if it was just the wind moving something around and they heard it and assumed.
One of the main characters in Lord of the Flies is Jack. Jack develops a fear of his own throughout the story. This fear has to deal with losing authority and having the other littluns turn against him. After Jack realizes that he may lose his authority over the group he begins to scare them by saying “The beast is sitting up there, whatever it is” “Perhaps it’s waiting” “Hunting”
‘Yes, hunting.’ ‘Hunting,’ said Jack… ‘I’ve got the conch. Ralph thinks you’re cowards, running away from the boar and the beast. And that’s not all.” (Goldin 126). As Ralph wanted to stay focused on the fire because he believed it would be the reason they got saved. In the middle of the novel Ralph gets mad at Jack for letting the fire go out and a ship went by. In the novel it states “There was a ship.
Out there.” ”We might have gone home--” (Goldin 70). Ralph believed that he was the leader but his main focus was trying to get saved. He kept fires around because he believed someone would see the smoke of the fire and rescue them.
Throughout the novel it shows everyone's fears. The characters who stood out most to me were Jack and Ralph. Jack let his fear overpower how he reacted to the situation. Jack ended up setting the island on fire due to him letting the fear of losing power get to him. Ralph’s fear of the unknown got to him by not knowing how or what to do when it came to hunting stuff. He began to be hated by Jack throughout the story and it led him in being hunted. This caused more fear to Ralph. All Ralph could do was run and try to strategize. Overtime you can see someone's fear rather they tell you or they just show you and you find out. There are multiple fears out in the world but the main fears in this novel are fear of the unknown, and fear of not
