Throughout time religion has played a huge role in a lot of people’s lives. Everyone has a religion, whether it be Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, or maybe even agnosticism (a belief where humans choose to not have a say in whether or not god exists). Every religion is different, but who’s to say what is right and what is wrong? Being raised in a Catholic family, I’ve been taught to believe in a set of rules that the religion practices and I’ve never ventured out to look at other religions beliefs and practices. Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity are three of many religions practiced all over the world, but with each come different beliefs along with similarities all of which are worth knowing about. Nirvana is a place of perfect peace and happiness, the highest state that someone can attain, a state of enlightenment, meaning a person's individual desires and suffering go away (Dictionary). Worship and meditation are different practices that could lead to nirvana. Worship for Buddhists can be done in many places such as stupas, temples, and homes. Most meditations include the lighting of candles and an image or statue of the Buddha. Buddhism splits off into three branches, Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. Theravada Buddhism is also known as “the way of the elders”, its main goal is to pass on the original teachings of Buddha unchanged. People who follow this school are taught to believe that life is full of suffering and that all human life comes to an end, so nothing should be desired. This form of Buddhism has 124,000,000 followers is found is Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka (Library). Next, Mahayana Buddhism also known as “The Big Vehicle” strays away from the original teachings of Buddha. It implies that all people can attain nirvana. Compassion in Mahayana Buddhism is not just a virtue, it is also a way of reaching enlightenment. In order to help yourself, you must help others. This form of Buddhism has approximately 185,000,000 followers and is prominent in central Asia and China (Library).
