Since its inception, Twitter has been amidst constant pressure to live up to expectation of being an innovative social media space. Statements such as the above have been made against Twitter all along since its inception till today.
According to latest data of the social media consumption, nearly 320 Million monthly active users (Appendix 1) on twitter (Twitter, 2015). The number of users is more or less equivalent to the populations of Unites States. (Google, 2015)
Amidst all the furors of the demise of twitter, twitter slowly but steadily has a plan to work towards maintaining its user base and to include relevant content in its information space to its users. The key to success of Twitter is to maintain and expand its current user base. The argument centers on User vs. Algorithm. Many proponents of Users free will question the ability of algorithms to fully understand the user’s need. Many also accuse twitter of following a Facebook model to curate content. As per Mathew Ingram (Jan 2015) “more than 10,000 people said they didn’t want Twitter to muck around with their timeline at all. And the main reason that most critics give is that doing this has the potential to make twitter more like Facebook, a place where content appears and disappears without warning, based on the workings of a black-box algorithm.” As Twitter is testing the boundary of curated content everyday, many staunch users of twitter seem to be complaining.
