“When you learn how to die, you learn how to live” (Albom, pg.104) This is Morrie’s outlook through the whole book, He knows death is on his doorstep but does not let it consume his life. He still continues to live each day as normal as his body allows him to. Morrie has a positive way of explaining detachment to Mitch. He describes the feeling of fear he first had when his coughing spells first appeared. He was able to take these feelings and understand what they were and how they could affect him. Instead of letting them, he looked past them and continued to live, not letting his illness overtake his life. I think I use Morrie’s idea of detachment by not letting every situation affect me for a long period of time. I get sad and angry from time to time, then with time I am back to myself again. Mitch had Morrie for a professor in multiple classes and Morrie was the one who told Mitch to complete a senior project in college. This project he completed completely from listening to Morrie each Tuesday that they would meet, listening to all of his ideas and suggestions. Mitch respected Morrie and stayed by his side. Even though the connection was lost between them for about 15 years or so, they reconnected like nothing had ever happened between them. When Mitch started meeting with Morrie back at his house, he began bringing a tape recorder to try and keep all of Morrie’s wisdom, including the memories shared between the two of them. He adjusted how he recorded to best suit Morrie’s comfort.
