In the summer of June of 1991, Jaycee Dugard’s life was normal until the unthinkable occurred. Jaycee was at age eleven when her life got taken from her for eighteen years. Jaycee had woken up to go to school when she realized her mother had already left for work. The night before she specifically asked her mom to wake her up and give her a kiss goodbye, but unfortunately she had forgotten. Jaycee’s mother wished from that moment on that she would not have forgotten because after this day, she was unsure if she would ever see her daughter again. Jaycee was a normal, fun, helpful, and loving child. She had a healthy relationship with her mother, yet her stepdad Carl, was mean to her at times. She realized she was being taken through a house and then to a hidden compound in the backyard where she was held captive. Phillip, the man who took her, would come into the compound where she was hidden and rape her nearly every day. Over the course of time, Philip fathered two daughters; one when Jaycee was fourteen and the second when she was seventeen. Philip revealed throughout this novel he was taking medicine and being counseled. He told Jaycee, “She was helping him with his “problem,” so other children wouldn’t have to.” This revealed the selfish acts Philip possessed. Parole officers visited Philip at his house weekly due to a previous rape conviction. No one suspected any wrongdoings at the home or of Jaycee and her daughters. Philips wife, Nancy, who was with him the day of the abduction, brought Jaycee and her daughters food, water, pet kittens, and even took Jaycee out shopping. Philip quit his job and made Jaycee help him run an advertisement card making business. Phillip and Nancy took care of them but used them to calm Philips problem
