Before the beginning of the essay, A Message to Garcia by Elbert Hubbard, an Apologia or written defense of one’s opinions is presented before the reader. The apologia begins by stating that if one is to work, one should work hard and be loyal. Instead of hating or despising those above you, strive to follow them and their orders. And if one finds themselves incapable of such an act, then resign and damn them all one wants. The apologia continues to state how the essay was written in a very short amount of time (under an hour) and while it was written very passionately and with great thought, the author never would have thought the essay would go so far and influence the actions of so many.
