A Midsummer Night’s Dream In the 19th century version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the costumes, the setting, a and the presentation of the production was very traditional. First of all, the costumes and makeup choices were elegant and classic, but also had a modern flare. For example, Thisbe’s costume was elaborate during the play within a play scene, and the couples’ costumes were high class. Also, not many actors wore makeup in this version. Additionally, the setting of the 19th century version was traditional, too. The setting included the set design, lighting, music, and props. The set design was very realistic and fit the time period well. The props for the production fit the time period appropriately, but were very exaggerated and ornate, such as Bottom’s large sword. Foremost, the costumes were cheap, and there was noticeable makeup. For example, many of the dresses for the women were plain and basic, and I noticed that Thisbe and Titania had makeup on during the play within a play scene. In spite of the costumes not being elaborate, the setting and presentation were excellent. The setting included a very small stage that the mechanicals performed and they performed on an actual stage. The stage included a jungle backdrop that contributed to the play having a comical effect. Also, there were many hanging lanterns, water for the fairy scene, and a lighted stage, but there was not much music in this production. Finally, the presentation of the modern movie was also favorable. The presentation consisted of how the lines were delivered and the movement of the actors. Bottom overacted many of his parts and he was portrayed as an actual ass, and since the stage was small, most of the comedy came from the actors trying to act in such a small space.
