There’s Magic in the Air The names longest day, shortest night, Litha, Summer Solstice seem very distinct. Although, as different and as random they might appear they all relate or have some connection towards each other. All of these names describe or refer to the setting of Shakespeare's peculiar play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The play occurs during mid summer which is formally called the Summer Solstice. In fact, that’s when the whole thing takes place. Moreover, it’s called the Summer Solstice because the word “Solstice” literally means the sun stopping. Also, this time of the year is known as the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere because it has the most hours of daylight. Whether people consider it or not they are connected to the sun biologically. It’s energy has an effect on people. The higher the sun energy the more pumped people’s emotions become. This could be an explanation to why “ A Midsummer Night’s Dream” for the most part, seemed to be centered around the love fiasco that arises in the beginning. Majority of the main characters had an infatuation with another character. For example, a young Athenian man named Lysander adores a young Athenian woman named Hermia. However, there is another young man named Demetrius who wants to be with Hermia but she loves Lysander. To make things even more complicated. Hermia’s friend named Helena is infatuated with Demetrius. This situation is unfortunate for Helena because no one loves her. Thankfully, this complicated dilemma was resolved. The time when supernatural creatures come out and creep in the night. As articulated by Raven and Crone, ( the name of an online website that advertises pagan supplies and crystals) “ On Midsummer the veil between the worlds is said to be very thin...” Also, it’s when legends and myths that surround this special day are narrated again in honors of its arrival. For instance, in parts of England there’s a legend that states if you stay up all night while sitting in a circle of stones on this day. A fairy will appear and start to harass you if you aren’t well prepared for its presence. Legends similar to this one most likely aided Shakespeare while he was creating “ A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. He had quite a few fairies emerge in his play, such as Puck. Most of the fairies in the play greatly altering the lives of the human characters. The involvement didn’t always go well. Although, if it wasn’t for the fairies unnecessary entanglement in the lives of the humans. Helena wouldn’t have gained the love of Demetrius. The mystical and supernatural nature of midsummer gave Shakespeare the opportunity to let his imagination ignite and guide the play. Thus evoking an undeniable tone of
