Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to go see the infamous Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s Dream, performed by Salve Regina University’s theatre club. I ventured off campus on Saturday, February 11th and headed to Casino Theatre in downtown Newport to see the 8 o’clock pm show. Directed by Tom Gleadow, the comedy was entertaining and a pleasure to watch. As the first scene opens, we are presented with a family who has arranged a marriage for their daughter, Hermia. However, there is one catch: Hermia does not love the man despite his love for her. To escape her family's fixed plans, Hermia runs away with another man whom she is madly in love with. Right as I entered the theatre, the set was visible. The set consisted of a series of wooden staircases and platforms wrapped in vines. There were also some vines hanging from the set onstage to the balconies in the audience. Beautifully designed by Pippin Mcgowan, the set was neat and well thought out. The magical fairy vibe it gave off matched the plot perfectly. Jessa-Raye Court was also successful in designing the character’s costumes. Hermia and Helena were dressed in white gowns that seemed to be from the 1930s. These dresses fit the girls well and appeared to be made well. My favorite costumes were the fairies. The fairies were clothes in flowy shift dresses and matching head pieces. The fairies were also barefoot which greatly contributed to the effect the costumes gave off. Lastly, Pucks costume was a hit. He was shirtless, with fur pants and fake ears which correlated with his personality. The cost of the show is $15.oo for general admission, $10.00 for seniors and military, $8.00 for Salve students, and free for Salve freshman. One of Casino Theatre’s upcoming events is Extensions Dance Company Concert at 8 0’clock pm on March 2, 3 and 4th as well as at 2 o’clock pm on March 4th. “Godspell” will also be performed at Casino Theatre on March 30th through April 1st as well as April 6th at 8 o’clock pm. This show will also be held on April 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th at 2 o’clock pm. There will be a spring band concert on April 29th at 7 o’clock pm and an Orchestra Concert on May 3rd at 7 pm. The prices of “A Mid Summer Night’s Dream,” “Godspell,” and the Extensions Dance Company Concert is $15.00 for the general public, $10.00 for seniors and military members and $8.00 for Salve Regina students. Both The Band Spring Concert prices and the Orchestra Concert are $8.00 for general admission, military, and seniors and $5.00 for Salve Regina students.
