A Modest Proposal: deplores the fate of the Irish people who are stricken by poverty. The argument given by Swift is somewhat sad because he argued that the poor Irish families should sell their children to the rich (the English who happened to be the land owners) after fattening the children (Swift 2004). The case presents a number of premises in the argument provided by Swift. Firstly, the first premise is in Swift’s argument is that uneducated mothers with many children are becoming a burden to their country. Additionally, his assumption is that this would boost the Irish economy and make it easier for England to control the unruly Irish ‘subjects’. His assumption in the fifth premise is that selling the children would increase care for children from their mothers, prevent abortion, and provide more food for the people. As a result the premises in Swift’s argument can be highlighted as below: P1: Uneducated mothers with many children are becoming a burden to their country P2: Reduced overpopulation in the country P3: Expand wealth for mothers P4: Prevent abortion P5: Care for children from their mothers will increase P6: Increase the economy P7: Provide more food for the people Conclusion: If the Irish sell poor children for food ,it would cause the economy to rise Swift argument’s conclusion is that the exercise of selling children for eating can pose positive effects on the Irish families’ moralities.
