A Readers Perspective of A Modest Proposal Different writing styles can have many different effects on a reader. Through wording and phrases an author can choose to convey their message in a variety of ways. In “A Modest Proposal,” the author Jonathan Swift heavily incorporates satire throughout the story. Swift whom is famous for his quality work specifically in satire, implies that overpopulation and poverty might be solved through eating all the poor children. Obviously such a cruel and unusual act would be a travesty to occur in reality, however the implication that something like this could happen may lead to individuals questioning their own morals and government. This period in time was one that was ruled by control, wisdom, limitation, and order. Readers may find this style of writing very appealing. I find it amusing that satire was appreciated in a time period ruled by control and order. Despite the fact that society and the government had opted for a regulated lifestyle there was still a sense of humor and an openness to abstract perspectives. I find it interesting that this rough behavior was so openly approving of it. I also feel that it is worth noting that following The Enlightenment period was the Romanticism period which featured significantly less focus on things such as order and limitation. Swifts satirical and blunt style was so well iconic that the style is known as “Swiftian.” With such a refreshing perspective into life through “A Modest Proposal” I would believe that many individuals from 1729 and even today are affected by Swifts writings.
