“A word is worth a thousand pictures.” This quote by Elie Wiesel explains something that I have always believed. Although there’s the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words”, I believe words can express more than what a picture can capture in a moment. The right words can express so much more than just a picture. Instead of taking pictures of me when I was little, my grandmother wrote me poems. Those have more meaning to me than pictures would have, because I can imagine her voice saying those things, and imagine what’s happening in her poems. They tell you who I was and about my personality from when I was one year old to when I was four. She talked about how much I talked, my determination, curiosity, and many other things. You wouldn’t be able to gather these things about me and my life with just a picture. That’s why these poems mean so much to me, and I’m glad she wrote them. They help the music tell a story. They symbolize different things to give a song a stronger meaning. They can make you understand what someone was thinking or feeling while they were writing the song. It takes the emotion from the melody, and makes it deeper and explains the story. Words can give music more significance in what story they are trying to tell. Without words, music could be nothing more than a few notes. An example is the song, “One Hundred Years” by Five for Fighting. It tells a story about growing up and getting to do all the things you want to do in your life. The words the writer chooses to use in the song are powerful. For example, when he writes, “suddenly you’re wise”, and it shows how quickly time has passed. He also says, “the sea is high”.
