The play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberyy, depicts the themes of race, finances, and gender which have improved since the 1950’s; however, more work needs to be done. A Raisin in the Sun was set in the late 1950’s in the South Side of Chicago. The Younger family is a poor black family who wants nothing more than to have a better life. Each of them have challenges to overcome and decisions to make throughout the play. All of them have to overcome being poor and black, but some of the characters also have to overcome gender expectations and inequalities. Jacobin Magazine wrote an article that states, “Racism and capitalism grew up together in America and cannot be separated from one another. Racism is not merely a product of economic inequality, but also part of how that inequality is produced and maintained.” Racism is unfortunately an institutionalized piece of our society. The inequality that black individuals face is not only by people who are explicitly racist, but also by other factors such as companies who don’t have equal hiring opportunities. When companies don’t have equal hiring practices, it becomes more difficult for black individuals to get a job and become successful in their careers. In turn, this makes black people be at a higher risk for poverty, which then means that they can’t afford to live in nicer neighborhoods. So although people are no longer bribing black people not to move into a certain neighborhood, there are still circumstances under which black people can’t move into where they would prefer. This type of racism is maintained because many people don’t realize things like this are happening unless it directly affects them. Therefore, a majority of white people don’t realize the full extent of what black people have to endure in their everyday lives. Some companies still discriminate against hiring women and some are male dominated fields so a woman would potentially feel uncomfortable trying to get a job. In the The Vietnam Investment Review, Huong wrote, “Equality between women and men is not only an important goal on its own, but it is also essential in overcoming poverty and achieving sustainable development.” Achieving equality in the workplace is not only important for women and the women’s rights movement, but also for having an extreme decrease in poverty. Many impoverished people are women or women with children. If women don’t get paid equally to men, then they can’t as easily afford to pay for the necessities of life such as a home, food, clothing, etc. This risk increases even more if the woman is a single mother.
