Both differences and similarities can be found when inspecting the theme of home in relation to the special settings in the play A Raisin in the Sun and the book Great Expectations.

The biggest difference is the amount of time spend at home. In A Raisin in the Sun, every scene takes place in one setting: their house, more specifically in their living room. Great Expectations has a lot of different settings; the three main ones being the village near the marshes in Kent, the town where Satis House is established and the city of London. The protagonist, Pip, travels between those three locations throughout the book. These movements through the fictional space are often linked with character change and can be inked with ‘home’. Joe and Biddy, on the contrary, stay at home and their personality stays the same: they’re always nice, kind, warm-hearted people. When we compare this to the play, we see that some figures hardly leave the house and they also don’t evolve as characters. Their view on life stays the approximately same the entire play.

Next, the similarities: there are small and big ones. A small one is that in both books the surroundings are described in detail. Because of this, every reader has the same image in their heads. A Raisin in the Sun starts with a description of the house, which uses words like ‘tired’ and ‘weariness’ and in Great Expectations all settings are written down precisely.
