Myself Self-awareness is defined as a conscious knowledge of one’s own character. It is difficult to be conscious of ourselves because we could encounter a painful process. Being self-aware is an essential element to prepare ourselves to encounter clients' personal matters, attitudes, and thoughts. Knowing my strengths and weaknesses helps me in my professional development. Being self-aware also helps me to be prepared ahead of time, and not let it become a barrier in helping others. I was born in Puerto Rico, a small Caribbean island in central America. I moved to Philadelphia after my parents’ divorce when I was six. My current community of Lawncrest is very ethnically diverse. We have a large community that cares for our neighborhood. We have community meetings where we discuss current issues. We have managed to come together and listen to one another respecting the different opinions. My community’s demographic does not …show more content…

I share some of her values of respecting others and using self-control so one might not offend those around us. What I don’t share is that to me she is stereotyping and labeling every “American” as disrespectful people that don’t care for others feelings. I understand she has probably witness some cases like that but not all Americans are same, just like all Arabic are not either. This is categorizing a whole country as an uncaring one, and I don’t see it that way. The interview was great in the sense that I could withhold my own opinion, giving her the respect she deserves. I might have a different opinion in some issues but she has the right of expressing herself. Maybe she experiences some problems with an American that might of made her think that way. Overall I enjoyed it and made me feel great. Self-awareness is difficult as it can hurt us dealing with our own issues but is essential to live a healthy lifestyle specially for Social Workers and those who enjoy helping
