A response to a written statement by the Welsh Government; ‘Welsh second language within our curriculum’
Introduction
This paper is going to respond to a written statement by the Welsh government; ‘Welsh language within our curriculum’, specifically discussing Welsh Second Language.
In this paper, I will discuss the content set out by Huw Lewis AM, (Minister for Education and Skills) in his written statement; ‘Welsh Second language within our Curriculum’ giving my opinion and understanding of Welsh as a second language within the foundation stage and Key stage 2 education. I will support my discussion and knowledge with statements from other articles and reports such as the Donaldson Report Successful futures (2015) and Estyn annual reports.

Lewis (2015) outlines within the Welsh Government written statement that incorporated into one of the six areas of learning; Languages, Literacy and Communication, there will be a clear progression and different achievement outcomes specific to the learning of Welsh Language and skills. Donaldson, (2015) also encourages the learning of welsh within the report ‘Successful Futures.’ He recommends that the curriculum should have “Appropriate emphasis on the Welsh Language and culture.” (UWTSD, 2016). The writer of this paper also agrees with Donaldson and Lewis. However, the learning of the Welsh Language should, under recommendation of Professor Sioned Davies and agreement of Huw Lewis be incorporated throughout the full Six Areas of Learning where appropriate. (Lewis, 2015.) In the opinion of the writer this may support more of a natural learning of the Welsh language through a continuum for both learners and
