The 2016 democratic candidate, Bernie Sanders, gives his speech a month before the Democratic National Convention with two goals in mind: to persuade his voters to continue the movement he is spearheading, as well as for delegates that hear his speech to vote for him instead of his opponent, Hillary Clinton. He effectively captivates his audience, and seemingly achieves his goals, through the rhetorical appeals of parallel structure, ethos, and pathos.
