Upon being imprisoned for marching Dr Martin Luther King wrote a letter to the fellow clergymen of Birmingham, addressing his reasons as to why he committed his “crime”, This letter was widely known as “The Letter of Birmingham”. This letter was very influential and paramount to the cause of civil rights as it spurred up future events that would play essential roles in ending racial segregation in America. Throughout his whole letter, King used Ethos, logos, and pathos to firmly get his message across while adding rhetorical devices such as repetition, metaphors, and biblical references.
Martin Luther King Junior proves and persuades his points on why blacks should be free by using a strong logos argument and powerful rhetorical questions. As Martin Luther King Junior uses logos he shows " In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: 1) Collection of facts to determine whether injustices are alive. 2) Negotiation. 3) Self-purification and 4) Direct action "(pg6,prgh 5). Martin Luther King Junior is showing the four steps to a non-violent campaign.
“We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God-given rights”(17). Dr.King explains why African Americans have the right to be impatient. He wants his white readers to understand why being given equal rights is such a important matter. The writer,a civil rights leader and pastor, is Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.
On April 3, 1968 King delivered his final speech “I’ve been to the mountaintop,” in Memphis Tennessee to a massive crowd at the Bishop Charles Mason Temple Church of God. His speech was to bring awareness to the unsafe working condition and wages that the African American sanitation workers received. Prior to Reverend King’s speech on Feb. 12, 1968 roughly one thousand black Memphis sanitation workers went on strike and refused to work until their demands were met. Unfortunately, their request was denied and King, as well as Reverend James T. Lawson, traveled to Memphis to lead a nonviolent march but some of the participants started to become violent breaking windows of building and looting. This was a setback for the peaceful boycott due to rowdy few one person was shot and killed.
“I have a dream today!” Was once said by Martin Luther King Jr. In my opinion while some might not say I say Martin Luther King Jr is effective in his speech because his use of analogies, parallelism, and his restatement to persuade his audience. Firstly, Martin Luther King Jr is persuasive with his analogies.
Certainly well as motivating message was one very clear and accurate. It can be confirmed through the reaction of the people, where he managed to capture thousands of followers who believed and still believe in its principles. King Jr. showed with action and example his position, which generated respect for the listener. For example, we can see in the video the constant attention of listeners to the message, the quorum, and the ovation approving and accepting to his call. And myself evaluating Martin Luther King Jr. as a speaker from 1 to 10, will certainly apply the highest score.
Martin Luther King Jr, a Baptist and church member, was arrested for protesting and fighting for civil rights peacefully, he saw that 8 white clergymen from Alabama had written a response about him and they criticized him and his followers' actions, he quickly wrote a letter in the spaces of whatever paper he could find. MLK used powerful words and phrases that carried a lot of emotion. He also employed parallel structures to emphasize his points and make them more memorable. He uses parallel structure by saying “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” practically saying that it's everyone's business, including his. This has the effect that it makes not only the audience but also the clergymen feel almost an urgency to act and that even a bit of injustice can jeopardize everything His intended effect was to have an extremely large impact on the reader and the clergymen and wants them to realize his point as well as sympathize with his actions.
The world is shocked once again by a senseless act of violence in the United States. One after another, Negroes have died in the long struggle to bring racial justice to the American continent. Most have died unsung - lynched, murdered, and buried in the swamps of the American South. Until recently their deaths awoke the conscience of few Americans and brought no change to the racialist structure of the Southern economic and social system. Now to their number is added Dr Martin Luther King.
Martin Luther King Jr., a minister and social activist, led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. He was an advocate for equality between all races and a civil and economic rights Activist. Because of his leadership, bravery and sacrifice to make the world a better place, Martin Luther King was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize. His incredible public speaking skills and ability to properly get his message across can clearly be scene throughout the speech. By using the rhetorical features, MLK’s speech reached a different level of effectiveness for his audience. Using credibility, authority, trustworthiness and similarity to build a relationship by using evidence, MLK achieved ethos. Then by stating his values and creating imagery achieved but hos vocabulary he effective used pathos. Finally, by his clarity, goals, evidence and consistency, MLK appropriately reached his audience logical and effectively using logos. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered for his great speeches, accomplishments and his leadership skills, but also for the sincerity of his heart for the freedom and unity of all people.
In the middle of the 1990’s, the United Sates was dealing with internal problems of citizens’ rights to political and social freedom and equality. Mainly these rights of African-Americans citizens. Although all men and women at this time were legally considered free and equal, these rights were still unjustly denied to the African-American people throughout society. In order to stand for equality, civil rights activists and supporting groups started to emerge. One well known leader during this time was Martin Luther King Jr., a black American Baptist minister.
Martin Luther King convinced his audience to stand up and fight for their rights; he used persuasion in a strategic way to up rise African Americans not only in the audience that day but across America into today. By using multiple emotive words, analogies and figurative language he created a beautiful persuasive Rhetoric speech that will be studied and referenced for years to come without disagreement there would be no conflict, and no real opportunity to gather people the way he did and influence people the way he did. On April 4, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy gave his remarks on the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Robert’s goal was to inform people on Martin Luther King’s journey and to strengthen people’s attitudes on the whole situation. Robert’s main points throughout the speech were how the country as a whole should move forward, why the states should not resort to violence but unity instead, and he also addressed that the country needed unity, love, and compassion.
Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most influential African-American activists in American History and was a key participant in the Civil Rights movement, the goal of which was to provide full civil rights to all rights in America. To attempt to gain support for his cause, MLK employs the use of emotional appeals, also known as pathos, and logical appeals, also known as logos, which aid to stir emotion and reasoning in the listener. It is more than obvious that MLK tends to tug at the heartstrings of his listeners with his emotionally charged language essential to his success. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. uses more powerful and plentiful examples of pathos in his literature, examples of which being his “I Have a Dream” speech and his “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, than logos due to the more powerful emotional connection they carry which can convince his listeners to sympathize with his civil rights movement.
Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential leaders of his time and played a crucial role in the African-American Civil Rights movement. Luther was a charismatic leader who took a firm stand against the oppressive and racist regime of the United States (US), devoting much of his life towards uniting the segregated African-American community of the US. His efforts to consolidate and harmonise the US into one country for all is reflected in many of his writings and speeches spanning his career. As a leader of his people, King took the stand to take radical measures to overcome the false promises of the sovereign government that had been addressing the issues of racial segregation through unimplemented transparent laws that did nothing to change the grim realities of the society. Hence, King’s works always had the recurring theme of the unity and strength of combined willpower.
