Novelist , Amy Tan, the author of “mother Tongue”, illustrate the problems every immigration family faces in their life due to their ‘broken English’. As immigration herself, she gave us the real-life story about her mom and herself which make the readers to consider the culture racism. Amy Tan states different Englishes that she uses in her life to imply that there is no right type of enlist, therefore there should be no prejudice.
Amy tan begins her essay by emphasize her identity as a writer. She states ‘I am not a scholar of English or literature… I am a writer’. This is a good example as a rhetorical ethos which definitely earn the respect from the reader and build the credibility to support her arguments.
Amy Tan tells the stories of her mother being treat unfair by the stockbroker who had lose her check and not sending it on time. She also gives the story that her mother being treat disrespectfully by the clinic. The staff didn’t take her seriously by losing her CT scan and make she reschedule the appointment. Even worse, they only make apology because her daughter was involved to resolve the problem. Both example makes readers sympathize with her mother. The math and science is precise and the English a judge call. She also notices the survey indicate that Asian students always do significantly better on math achievement tests than in English. Her exprience and the survey illustrate her ideal that her limitation in English due to the ‘broken English’ environment that she grow up with. She believed that her mother’s English limited her possibilities in life and affected her results on achievement tests, IQ tests, and the SAT.
