Sophia Wiercinski Mrs. Korey English II Advanced Honors 21 March 2023 In his cleverly crafted and humorously analytic speech given to Lesley University graduates in the 2019 commencement address, Jason Reynolds emotionally coaxes and carefully vocalizes his audience through the use of credibility, cliches, and humor, to advocate that sometimes the right thing to do can have consequences. Jason's strong rhetorical devices and his way of emotionally persuading his audience allow him to develop a captivating commencement speech. Jason Reynolds exhibits himself to be a strong speaker and starts his commencement speech with the use of establishing credibility. He states, “The first thing I would like to say is, thank you.
In Steve Jobs’ commencement address at Stanford University on June 12, 2005, he used pathos to connect with the audience’s emotions and establish trust in their heart and future. For example, Steve Jobs said, “you have to trust that they will connect in the future”(par. 8). In this quote Steve Jobs used pathos to persuade the students to have faith that everything will work out well, but they cannot piece everything together until the future becomes the present. Steve Jobs truly connects with the audience by connecting the speech to the audience’s emotions and belief in their passion.
Throughout the speech Bush uses many sources to that strengthen his credibility and appeals to ethos. To introduce the speech Bush started with an Anaphora “Our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack.” Bush uses the word our to make the country feel as one and be together. He also uses anaphora in the sixth paragraph, he said “I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened.” Bush does this to help unify the country during this hard time, he knew many ordinary people had been affected wanted to make sure that everybody knew who to pray for.
The third and final rhetorical appeal is the usage of pathos, or emotional appeal. A majority of the emotional appeal used in the speech is embedded throughout with examples of stories of American’s struggling. “It is about ending the disgrace of a mother in Flint, Michigan, telling me what has happened to the intellectual development of her child as a result of lead in the water in that city, of many thousands of homes in California and other communities unable to drink the polluted water that comes out of their faucets (Sanders).” Bernie uses a specific example of a child with a learning defect due to the water to elicit pity and an appalling reaction from his viewers. The fact that people in the United States, regarded by the citizens as ‘the land of the free,’ and that a child doesn’t have the freedom to drink safe, clean water evokes an emotional response.

When I read my previous papers, my first thoughts are always wondering how I improved. Ow that I’ve completed English 1302.710, I expected a change in my writing skills. After all, I did write a lot, especially in a type of writing that I wasn’t comfortable: Rhetoric. For the class, I had to learn to persuade my audience, do research, develop personal values, and use different kinds of expression in my writing. Even though I was just learning, I have met the objective of the course and what it teaches.
