Is there a right way to grief the loss of a loved one? Everybody on this earth grieves differently, some with anger, guilt, acceptance, and even denial. In William Faulkner's “A Rose for Emily” he tells the story of a woman in denial. Not only is she in denial of her husband's death, but she is in denial that he did not love her like she loved him. This is the reason that her husband died in the first place because she killed him. Because of all these emotions, she feels she grieves in a very unhealthy way. In the short story, A Rose for Emily, by William Faulkner, the grievance of death by Emily is relatable in the fact that no one is ever prepared for someone's death, everyone grieves differently, and being in denial can hurt the healing process. …show more content…

As Homer is laying on the table, they describe him and his figure “once lain in the attitude of an embrace, but now the long sleep that outlasts love, that conquers even the grimace of love, has cuckolded him.” (Faulkner 698). This shows the intracat language used to describe the feelings and state of Homer before and after his death. Because of this illustration “We sense that we can never be the same people we were prior to our losses.” (Attig 134). Not only does this apply to deceased people, but it can also apply to loss of feelings and emotions. Once someone loses love for someone or something, they as a person can change. Like how Homer and Emily did not share the same love for one another, and this sent Emily into a spiral. In a Rose for Emily, insanity is portrayed as the story goes on in Emily's actions. Throughout the story we slowly see Emily's mental state deteriorate due to the loss of loved ones and unexpected news that flips her world upside
