The short story I choose was “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner. I choose this story because the way you described it as a woman that shows affection towards another person but there is a dark twist at the end. The plot appealed to me because it sounded interesting but not too romantic. This story is very long and if read quickly you will not understand what is happening. As I read the story I highlighted things in three different categories, Emily and her character, the setting and the townspeople, and anything that seemed important (motifs, symbols). One section may continue from the previous section but it could change topics and talk about something different then what was just happening. Also all the sections are connected in a way that foreshadows events that you would not notice. I first noticed this when I reread the story and did the annotating. After reading each section I marked next to the roman numeral and wrote about where this section takes places in the story. At the end I looked at all the notes and figured out how the story takes place chronologically and saw that certain characters revealed prior to being mentioned. After reading the story I did some research on the author to find if there is any outside context that influenced his story making. I learned that the story takes place in fictional city Jefferson, Mississippi in the fictional county of Yoknapatawpha County. These places were based off Lafayette County, Mississippi, where Faulkner spent most of his life. By doing background information it can help visualize what is happening making it easier to understand the story.
