Sam Levenson, The author of “A Hike in New York City” uses figurative language to entertain the readers. Some examples the author uses are sarcasm, irony, and hyperbole. These are all examples of humorous tone. They contribute to the story and give it emotion. In most stories or books using emotions to get through to the reader is very important. One example of figurative language that I felt heavily impacted the humorous tone was sarcasm. I found many different examples of sarcasm throughout the story, but some that stood out to me the most were “Miraculously we all ended up with salami.”, “He would yell “look out” and fall off the cliff.”, “One kid always got a brilliant idea.” I think all of these quotes from this story show the use of …show more content…

A few examples of irony that stood out to me throughout the story were “We came home with color in our cheeks-green”, “She took one whiff and she broke out in blotches”, and “Phillip was the leader. He was the one to get lost first”. I think one of the examples from the story that stood out to me the most was “We came home with color in our cheeks-green”. The mom expected them to come home with red on their cheeks from spending time outside and being hot and tired. But instead, they came back with their cheeks green instead, meaning they were sick. The mom was not expecting this but neither were the readers. This may cause readers to notice the humorous tone and see that this isn’t a serious story. Another good example of Irony is “She took one whiff and broke out into blotches.” They thought she might be happy from the flowers they gave her but instead she had an allergic reaction. This will probably cause readers to chortle or giggle because it’s the opposite of what they were expecting to …show more content…

Some examples of hyperbole I noticed were “I can't go anymore the heat is killing me.”, “We climb mountains in the woods.’’, “A bear could eat you up.” All of these sentences show exaggeration which is a form of hyperbole. This is very important to the story because it contributes to and adds to the humorous tone. For example, “I can’t go anymore, the heat is killing me.” Although it may feel like the heat is killing him obvouisly he isn’t actually dying. Because of the exaggeration used in this sentence, readers may understand his feeling and what it’s like to feel like your dying from heat, so they might let out a giggle. Another example is “A bear could eat you up.” It’s possible for a bear to eat you , but in this sentence, it's exaggerated so this may cause readers to laugh when they realize it was a
