In John chapter 7 and 8, the Religious Leaders sought to find a reason to condemn Jesus, arrest Him, and stone Him. In chapter 7, Jesus is teaching in the Temple on the last day of the Festival of Shelters or Tabernacles. While he was teaching, the Pharisees sent Temple Guards to arrest Jesus but the guards were amazed by His teachings so they did not arrest Him.
In chapter 8, Jesus returned to the temple the next morning and resumed teaching. While Jesus was teaching, the Pharisees sought to trap Jesus by bringing a woman who was caught in the act of adultery before him and asked Him if she should be stoned. The disciple asked Jesus if the man’s blindness was a result of his own sin or the sin of his parents.
The disciples assumed that the blindness was the result of sin. It was common belief then, and still is in some cultures, that illness and unfavorable circumstances in life are a direct result of sin.
This is a tough question to answer. Does God punish us with illness for our sin or the sin of our parents? The short answer is no. Ezekiel 18:20 is quite clear on this, “The person who sins is the one who will die. The child will not be punished for the parent’s sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child’s sins. Righteous people will be rewarded for their own righteous behavior, and wicked people will be punished for their own wickedness.”
That being said, the world we live in is not the world that God created. When Adam and Eve sinned, the perfect world that God created became plagued with sin, strife, sickness, and death. While the sinful actions of each of us can and do have consequences on our family and friends, you cannot say that the only reason a person gets sick or remains healthy is because of their sin or
