Danielle Hall Dr. Dale Bailey English 233G August 23, 2017 A Thousand Splendid Suns The A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini introduced many cultural differences from what I am used to in the United States. Many of these differences are the men in this country marry multiple women and has multiple children. There are also many other cultural differences throughout this novel that is an everyday normal occurrence. This novel has helped me realize that I was raised very different from how others have been raised. One of the issues that I found in the first few pages in the novel is that Mariam’s mother, Nana, states that she wishes that her father would had the stomach to go ahead and kill Mariam. In the very first paragraph of the novel Nana refers to Mariam as a harami which means “bastard child”. This is also another issue that I noticed while reading. I personally have never had to go through this situation personally with my mother, so I was shocked reading this part. In another part of the novel Mariam learns that her father was never married to her mother and that they were disowned by her grandfather and her dad. Mariam’s dad is a very wealthy man who had three wives and nine children but he never helped her mother financially and never cared to see Mariam even though she was his child. Her mother also fills her head with things like “your father does not love you” and “your father lies to you”. I can see how this would confuse her with how she feels. I am also realizing while I am reading this that not everyone has been raised in the same environment and culture that I was raised in. This book is a good example in showing everyone that reads it that not everyone will see the way you do or have the same values and morals that you have lived
