It’s apparent that discoveries are made every day, from the insignificant finding of a new restaurant in town to the life-changing discovery of a new cure for cancer. However, what is mostly underestimated about these findings is their emotional value and the recognition that the emotional aspect of discovery is what allows it to be most influential on an individual. These emotional awakenings provoke confrontation, acceptance and an evaluation of one’s values. This ultimately allow for various perceptions and conclusions to be made about one’s self and humanity as a whole. Mariam’s life becomes a lesson to the reader, a chance to acknowledge their life, the opportunities offered and lost, but most importantly the recognition of those less fortunate. It forges the reader to make a commitment to themselves to provide those like Mariam with hope that ‘shines with the bursting radiance of a thousand suns’. The imagery of this line incorporates natural aspects to the novel, with ‘a thousand [splendid] suns’ becoming an extended metaphor for the incomparable beauty of nature and its relationship with humans.
