There are times when chance takes a control of the things we do, when we just cannot explain the unexplainable but we accept it anyway as a result of the extraordinary results. For me this was never more undeniable than just last month, when I was granted an opportunity to travel to Verona, Italy, as a part of something the army likes to call a staff ride. It is a great opportunity as an organization, were we as service members have an opportunity travel, learn something new, build esprit de corps, and share experiences, both past and present. This trip known as a staff ride, was the perfect chance to learn about the men and women who preceded us and paved away not just for the Army, but the world we know today. If not for the sacrifices made during the second world war, the world as we know it would be an exceedingly different place. Furthermore, an occasion to learn about one of, if not the bloodiest campaigns of the second world war was something for me as a history enthusiast, something I could absolutely sink my teeth into. Moreover, with a wealth of knowledge gained, I proceeded to do additional research on the Italian Campaign and simultaneously discovered that my next paper due was a research paper on a topic of my choosing. Immediately after realizing what my topic would be, I continued my research and searching that would help facilitate the creation of an outstanding research paper. This history behind the Italian Campaign was the aforementioned topic of the staff ride and my research topic once I discovered the importance the campaign had on the second world war. For example, when the common person thinks World War II the they think Adolf Hitler, D-Day, Pearl Harbor, and Winston Churchill, not about the sacrifices forged on the Italian peninsula, were U.S. troops fought the Nazis up steep mountains and passes all the way back to Germany. Furthermore, discovering information on this lost campaign was more than an inconvenience, as much of the information on the 92nd Infantry Division had to be found outside of the UMUC library. Additionally, I was able to find large amounts of information relating to the actual campaign in the library and apply it with what I learned during the staff ride I attended. Subsequently, I was able to paint a much more translucent picture, along with a more transparent interpretation of how the campaign occurred, what was at stake, and what it enabled, and ultimately what military operations succeeded it. With the information I gathered I based my thesis on the importance of the Italian Campaign and supported this thesis with three exceedingly substantial reasons why this campaign helped shape and mold the outcome of the war and the world we know
