George Orwell depicts a society in which human qualities are being lost due to a government that takes away freedom from the people. In the novel 1984 the main character named Winston lives under a totalitarian government that constantly surveys its people. Due to the constant surveillance of the people many human qualities have been taken away. This type of government can be seen today through countries such as North Korea and Afghanistan. In this society they lived under constant surveillance because of a device called the telescreen that, received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard¨(Orwell 6). This shows that there is constant surveillance in this society and everything you say is being heard. The telescreens take away freedom from the people, which takes away a human quality. Also, even if you think you are in a safe position from the telescreen it could still be dangerous like when “Winston kept his back turned to the telescreen. In the novel the political party uses a slogan that says, “WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH”(Orwell 17.) This shows that the government is trying to mislead their citizens, so they use this slogan. The government is trying to show their views to their citizens and they repeat this slogan to them. Furthermore, everything from the past has been changed or destroyed, “every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered”(Orwell 128). This shows that the government wants the people to follow their current views rather than looking at the past. They want to control their citizens by providing information that only helps them. Also, the party tries to spread news that favors them like when the telescreen said, “attention comrades: we have glorious news for you. We have won the battle for production… The phrase “our new, happy life recurred several times”(Orwell 51). This shows that the government is trying to mislead citizens by spreading news. This causes people to believe that everything is fine even if the government is making it seem better than it really is.
