After over a year’s work experience as an administrative assistant at A1 Speech Therapy, my interest and drive to become a speech-language pathologist has been cultivated thoroughly with daily first-hand interactions with clients and their families. While my foundation as a future clinician has been solidified through exposure to knowledge imparted from lectures in both speech-language pathology and psychology subjects, I feel that the nature of my affinity towards speech-language pathology has been reinforced through my direct observations of how clients feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when once impossible goals become easily surpassed with practice and perseverance as guided by their treating clinician.
As an administrative assistant in a speech and language clinic, I have developed lifelong skills that will facilitate my experience as a graduate student and future clinician, such as retaining information on each client’s progress, needs and upcoming therapy or evaluation considerations. My participation in these weekly programs included leading children and parents in targeted song and play activities to facilitate and foster the child’s awareness, discrimination and motivation to produce and comprehend age appropriate sounds and semantic concepts. These programs were designed by Janet Barsoumian, speech-language pathologist and the CEO and Founder of A1 Speech Therapy. Throughout my experience leading these programs, I worked hands-on with materials, resources and techniques that are commonly utilized by speech-language pathologists in pediatric clinical settings, which helped me create, organize and conceptualize ideas and inspiration for clinical activities in upcoming therapy
