Displaying, collecting and preserving arts are, for sure, the main functions of museums and we have discussed this during class; however, this article basically point out the biggest problem which is how to find the balance of displaying and collecting arts for museums. I have to say I am pretty shocked when I looked at those data because it is clearly that many of great art works do not get a chance to be seen by the audience, which is definitely a huge loss for the public. Also, it is museums that decide to display whose art works or what kind of art works. There are many curatorial reasons of displays, but still among all these collections, audience is not the one to choose what to see. Museums, serving as an educational role, have the responsibility to acknowledge people so it is understandably that they will choose a large variety of art works to be displayed; however, sometimes audience wants to choose their own selections of art works to see. So if there are some conflicts between the public’s taste and the scholars’ taste, what should the museums do to overcome those issues? The author actually provides some ways to make this easier to balance, which is “publishing collections online” (n.p.). It is definitely true that preserving is one of the most important functions of museum as I mentioned before, but I kind of disagree of his opinion. Beside of protecting, I think museums are more serving as a creative palace where people gather and study from the past and create something new out of it. Definitely, museums need to protect those arts first; otherwise, we do not even get a chance to see them, but I do not think it is the whole mission of museum. It is just like why musicians study the recordings from those great masters. Simply because they want to gain more understanding through the piece and put their own thoughts into the music and interpret it using their own ways. This requires lots of thinking, and related back to our class discussion that there is no doubt that museum is also a place for us to get some deep thinking and meditations as well. I totally agree that preserving is as important as other roles that museums are serving, but from my understanding it is not the only
