1. Social Darwinism: This idea came from Charles Darwin evolution and natural selection that applied to human society. It states that a species that can not survive will died. Herbert Spencer who is the advocate behind this idea, felt that the human society develop by competing with one another. He also concluded that only the society expand because only the fittest people survived. Herbert Spencer, an English philosopher first brought up the idea of social Darwinism followed buy other industrial leaders. This idea reinforced individualism and supported the laissez faire movement. 2. Individualism: This was one of the strongest belief of the era which depicts that anyone irrespective of your background or situation, you had a chance to be rich and rise in society. The Gospel Of Wealth: This was an era of Philanthropy were wealthy people gave away huge some of money to help build American culture and society. This idea simply talks about bestowing charity and to reach out to those in need. Andrew Carnegie was the advocate of this idea. He spent his later life in acts of Philanthropy and gave away $350 million to build libraries, universities, schools and hospitals. These resources provided the information people need to improve themselves. This also help the United States to grow educationally. 4. Naturalism: Here, realist argued that some people failed in life due to the circumstances they could not control. They also argued that people could control their lives and make choices to improve their situation. Stephen Crane and others like Jack London and Theodore Dreiser were advocate for this idea. Stephen wrote the novel entitled Maggie “A girl of the street”. Naturalism drew people to the realities of the American society which is as a result of rapid industrialization.
