ASCC BEP Standards The American Samoa Bachelor in Education Program (ASBEP) requires student teachers to reflect on certain standards provided, which guided them throughout their journey of being a student teacher (ST). The ASBEP standards exist to guide the student teacher to have a set of skills and goals for all students: Competence in content area(s); competence in the Samoan language, history, and culture; technology; and diversity. However, the usage of ASBEP standards in the classroom showed improvement for both the student teacher and students in the classroom. Being confidence in teaching science was the main goal for the student teacher. In order for him to achieve his goal, he used content areas that are fun for him and the students. The ST also used bilingual because he’s not comfortable in using English only. To build the ST’s confidence is to do what makes him comfortable in teaching Science. With that being said, using bilingual is not only to build the ST’s confidence, but it also helped a lot of students to learn better. During the ST’s solo, majority of students asked to translate a lot of words from the lessons into Samoan. In the end, a lot of students mastered the objectives for each lessons because they understand it better when bilingual is used for instruction. Myers (2014) emphasized that bilingual is greater than the English immersion program academically and linguistically. The bilingual program students score substantially above students in the English only program on a range of metrics.
