The book Adams vs. Jefferson: The Tumultuous Election of 1800 is a book describing what led up, and what happened during the 1800 election. Furling went as far as to mention the American revolution and talked all the way to the year 1800. Although he didn’t talk about the 1800 election until the last couple chapters, Ferling filled the readers minds with what was going on in America before the election. Ferling gives a short biography about all the candidates in the election of 1800, like Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Charles Pinckney, and Aaron Burr.
The election of 1800 was the first election to be decided by the House of Representatives. Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, both had the same amount of electoral votes. At the end it was decided, Jefferson as president and Burr as vice president. Thomas Jefferson as president scaled back Federalist building plans for Washington and cut the government budget. He also reduced the size of the army by a third and cut back the navy to six ships.

Their methods of campaigning were first spotted when Henry Clay and John Adams made an agreement to defeat Andrew Jackson. Adams was successfully elected president with the help of Henry Clay. Soon after the election, Adams was accused of making a ''corrupt bargain'', which was when Henry Clay convinced congress to elect Adams to assure his victory.
Background Leading up to the Election of 1800, the United States of America had John Adams, a Federalist, as the current President. My poster is promoting Thomas Jefferson to be elected as the third president during the election of 1800 including my arguments why. I wrote and added a lot of meaning in the phrase, “Surely, if you are looking for someone to have a beer with you, turn to Aaron Burr. Otherwise, if you are looking for someone to run YOUR country, turn to Thomas Jefferson”. The Duel On July 11, 1804, the most famous duel in American history occurred between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, the Vice President of the United States at the time. Hamilton and Burr shot at each other on the plains in Weehawken, NJ. Hamilton was wounded, and died the next day. Burr was unharmed but could never recover his political reputation. I think the reason “The Duel” was used as the first chapter was to catch the readers attention and introduce the themes of the book.
Throughout the 1800's, men were looked at as the people who are supposed to make things better. Supposed to make things easier and problems go away smoother. One man by the name of Henry Clay was what men were supposed to be. Men were supposed to be hard working and dedicated to what they believed in so that the people around them would believe too. While being apart of the young United States government, he realized that country as a whole had to advance, and that is what he did.

In a highly competitive, controversial race filled with fake smiles and harsh glares, those votes made all the difference in the world to these two men and their running mates. Because George Washington refused a second term, political parties took root when election time came around. The debate between Thomas Jefferson and his opponent, Aaron Burr was considered very heated, so when congress gave Jefferson the presidency and Burr the vice presidency, many people became defensive. Jefferson strongly believes that all men are equal regardless of political party. Instead of degrading the other political party, he used a different technique so that every citizen would calm down. Jefferson stated that “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists” (Jefferson). Because the government release some of its power, which allowed the people to vote for who they wanted, it gave some insight for Jefferson about what a good government is.
