He knows that animals in need should be valued and helped. In the short stories, “Everything Will Be Okay” and “Aaron’s Gift,” the authors show us that you should always try to help out animals in need. “Everything Will Be Okay” is a short story about a boy named James who finds a sick, stray kitten and fights to save it. The short story “Aaron’s Gift” is about a boy named Aaron who finds a pigeon with a broken wing and cares for it. While these characters are very different, they both help out an animal in need. Aaron, the main character in the story Aaron’s Gift, finds a pigeon with a broken wing on the street. He picks it up and soothes it, saying, “I’m gonna take you home, Pidge. Yes, yes, ssh. Good boy. I’m gonna fix you up” (Levoy 2). Aaron sees a hurt pigeon on the street. He picks it up and takes it home to try and fix its wing. The pigeon could have a disease, but Aaron still tries to help it, since the pigeon needs some care. Aaron wants to help animals since his grandmother had a pet goat that passed away during a massacre. Aaron is training Pidge as a carrier pigeon and giving him food as a reward. “And Pidge grew fat and contented on all the popcorn and crumbs and corn and crackers and Aaron’s grandmother’s breakfast rolls” (Levoy 3). Pigeons on the street don’t get a lot of good food, so Aaron is helping Pidge by fixing his wing but also gives him a lot of food.
